Things I Miss and Things I don’t
I was thinking the other day of things that do and don’t miss about being in the States. Now my 2 months is nothing compared to the years that team Helene has spent out of the states(yes they do come back for about 6-8 weeks a year). I thought it would make a list of things I have missed. People ask if I am excited about coming back to the States. I feel mixed. Part of my heart will be left behind in Helene. I am also trying to keep my head here until I get in line for security at the airport.
As I was writing I thought it would also be fun to do the same for Helene. So enjoy this long post.
I miss-
- People- I have missed my family, friends and of course Allie
- Showers- I really do not consider my 20-40 second cleansing rinse everyday a shower
- My moms cooking and my dad’s bbq- Food is good here but, she can really cook
- Being able to download stuff off the internet- We have a 1gb cap a month to share between 8 people
- Stores- While you sure save money, it is nice to be able to go down the street to Walgreens, Safeway or Target when you need something.
- Being able to throw toilet paper in the toilet- Yep I am in a third world country so in the trash can it goes.
- Cars- They are convenient
- Phone- While it has been a nice break, the convince of having a phone is great.
I do not miss-
- Traffic-No road rage here
- MTV- That super sweet 16 show makes my blood boil, even when I am just surfing.
- Commercials- Need I say more
- Cars- They make so much noise, and I love being stopped on the path and just talking
- My phone- It is nice being able to be out in the community and not get a phone call. And not have people ask why you did not answer.
- Money- Yes I have used money here, but I have not worried about money all summer.
I will miss from Helene. VERY MUCH
- The people- I have become friends with Ewings and will miss seeing him everyday. Being here for two months has been great as I have learned many peoples names and can truly feel like I am greeting them each day II see them.
- The Relationships- People make more time for each other here. When they stop and ask you how it is going, they really want to know. One day it took me 20 minutes to get from the Clinic to the dock(a 3 minute walk), because people just wanted to stop and chat.
- The unashamed singing- People at church just belt out their love for Jesus like there is no tomorrow.
- School-I will miss hearing “Mr.Paul come here.” While it can be very taxing I get great joy out of seeing the kids understand something new.
- The Staff here- Every meal is always full of jokes and many laughs.
- The rain- When it rains here, it RAINS, yes even better then Oregon rains.
- The beauty- I will miss waking up and being able to look over the sea. The stars at night and the view from the prayer deck.
- Juegetos-If you have been to Helene and dont know what I am taking about, i feel sorry for you. They are like little milkshakes in a plastic bag and only cost 3 limps for the good milk ones. So like .10 cents. Personally I think they may be a taste of heaven.
What I will not miss from Helene,
- Roosters- While they no longer wake me up, they are still so annoying. The whole idea that they only crow at sunrise, what an urban legend. Or the roosters here are just messed up and crow 24/7
- Bugs…..
- Trash-The smell of trash will not be missed
- Eggs-Eggs are plentiful here, so they are at almost every breakfast
- Cockroaches-Never look in the kitchen at night…….
- The heat- Not sweating 24/7 will be weird thou.
- Well thats about it. I love Helene. Enough said.
Well I hope you enjoyed this post. It was a fun one to write. When I leave on Saturday I will be sad. I hope God brings me back to Helene soon.
God Bless,
Paul
Paul,
I love these kind of blogs! What a great list of good and bad from both places! I’ll treasure the comment about my cooking!
Enjoy every moment!
Love,
Mom

You have touched so many in your service…Compassion sends ripples across many hearts.Even when you leave, you leave a part of yourself. Know that you have nourished the seed of God’s love …this is true salvation…
